Chapter 22

Tuesday.

Sunday, with the help of Shane and Tim, all of us first years managed to get the entire week’s reading and summaries done. My session with Icarus went poorly. I got given a shrapnel proof box for my lamps, which still blow up before I can even try to turn them on. He tried to start with the darkness, and I took out every light in the room. Including the fire that was keeping us cosy.

Monday was surprisingly cruisy, except training is brutal–luckily not for me. Not so lucky for everyone, including Tammy. Hercules now has me pummelling them on the regular, with far less treadmill time, so that I can try to adjust to my new strength and speed.

Luckily Master Icarus doesn’t have any more plants for us to experience, but our Tuesday session on my darkness is, well, weird.

“You need to focus, child. Turn off the light. That is all your darkness needs to do. Like a switch.” Icarus is frustrated. Shane was able to do this particular parlour trick after an hour the first time they met; I know because Icarus yells that at me on occasion. It’s the third session for me.

“But how? There isn’t a switch. If I open the roller door light and dark come out, then nothing happens. Ugh.” I flop backwards into the chair. “There is no switch, Yoda! No fracking switches!” And apparently Master know-it-all thought it appropriate to bespell me. I can no longer swear. Twenty-four hours of substituted verbs. Perfect.

“Maybe try to imagine it dimming. Then going out like a candle.” Shane is gently coaxing me from where he sits with a machine asking him to turn certain bulbs off, kind of like an arcade game.

“But it all comes out. There is just no way.” I punch the couch once more. I was downgraded to soft and heavy furnishings after a few more, small, explosions.

“Okay. One moment.” Icarus ups and leaves the room.

“Does that mean we are done? What time is it anyway? Or have you managed to stop the watch too?” I am snarky towards Shane, but he knows I’m frustrated

“I think maybe you need to relax a bit. Just while he isn’t here. You got this.” Shane scoots closer to me and offers me his open palm from the floor. I reluctantly take it and some comfort warms my hand. Before the sensation can climb past my elbow the door lurches open once more.

“Right. Let us try again. Colwyn, you should not have used a roller. You couldn’t have known about her duality, but well, welcome to the club. Teach her to house it in wells. Wells with lids, preferably. She can dip into them or plunge head long. But this door is not suitable.”

Colwyn's mouth pops open audibly. Before he can even formulate sounds other than a grunt, another person arrives.

“Master, I believe you needed some assistance?” The new man is so pretty! Like that rocker emo kind of pretty. Stunning silver hoops are pierced into his lower lips.
